Crisis Response

If you are with a student in an emergency situation, call campus police at 962-8100 or dial 911. If you are unsure whether the situation requires immediate, rapid intervention, call Counseling & Wellness Services (CWS) at 966-3658 and ask to speak with the staff member on call.

Any member of the UNC community seeking consultation about when to intervene on behalf of a student, how to respond to a student in distress, and where to refer students in need of care should contact CWS at 966-3658 or the Office of the Dean of Students at 966-4042.

It is not uncommon for faculty and staff to be the first to recognize when a student is in distress. Students often confide in faculty and staff. As someone who interacts regularly with students, you may be able to see dramatic changes in a student’s behavior. Trust your instincts. If you are concerned about a student, take it seriously. Keep notes of any interactions you find troubling and call for assistance when needed.
