Number of Religious/Spiritual Student Organizations at UNC in September 2009

CIRP Data: Carolina in 2007  

  • 81.4% of Carolina first year students identified as having a religion: Main religions identified: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam 
  • 75.5% of comparative institutions first year students identified as having a religion: Main religions identified: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam 
  • 5.9% Difference between the number of religious first year students entering Carolina and the number of religious first year students entering comparative institutions.

  • 81.8% of Carolina first year students identified as having a religion: Main religions identified: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam
  • 74.5% of comparative institutions first year students identified as having a religion: Main religions identified: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam
  • 7.3% Difference between the number of religious first year students entering Carolina and the number of religious first year students entering comparative institutions
  • .4% increase from 2007-2008 in religious first year students attending Carolina
  • As the number of religious first year students notably dropped at comparative institutions, they increased at UNC this year.

CIRP Data: Carolina in 2009

  • 80.9% of Carolina first year students identified as having a religion (at other institutions it is 73.8%): Main religions identified: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam
  • 91.5% of Carolina first year students regularly discuss religion (at other institutions it is 83.6%).
  • 43.1% of Carolina first year students rate themselves in the highest 10%, when compared with their peers regarding their own spirituality (at other institutions, it is 37.9%).
  • Though there was a slight decrease in this in-coming class at Carolina, that percentage decrease was consistent across comparative institutions, and we still have a high percentage.

CIRP Data: Carolina in 2010

  • 81.1% of Carolina first year students identified as having a religion:
  • 76.5% of comparative institutions first year students identified as having a religion (this is up from 2008)
  • 4.6%  Difference between the number of religious first year students entering Carolina and the number of religious first year students entering comparative institutions
  • 92% of Carolina students regularly discuss religion with their friends
  • The number of religious first year students steadily increased about 1% each year, as where at UNC students have remained consistently between 81%-82%
