The University of North Carolina’s Policy on Sexual Assault

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is committed to fostering a safe and healthy environment in which each member of its community may realize her or his full potential.  Sexual assault is any form is not tolerated at UNC-Chapel Hill and is a violation of the Honor Code.

Did you know?

1 in 4 women is sexually assaulted in her lifetime.

Over 75% of all sexual assaults are between people who know each other.

Women are four times more likely to be sexually assaulted by someone they know than by a stranger.

According to a study by the U.S. Department of Justice, a college or university can expect to have 35 sexual assaults per 1,000 female students each year.

Fewer than 5% of college students who are sexually assaulted report the crime to law enforcement.

According to North Carolina law, if someone is intoxicated, they are unable to give consent to any type of sexual contact.
In other words, having sex with someone who is intoxicated is considered sexual assault.

Anyone is at risk of being raped. However, many more women than men are sexually assaulted.

Most rapes occur in someone’s own apartment, house, or dorm room.

Alcohol is a factor in 90% of sexual assaults reported by college students.

The risk of rape is four times higher for women aged 16 to 24, than for any other population group.
